Everything You Want to Know About the Guest Room
I did it! It's complete! The guest room has been revealed and I am head over heels in love with how it turned out!
So here's a little backstory: This room was a "catch-all" room from day one. In other words, It's where all the things we didn't know what to do with went to die. It was furnished with everything I once had in my college dorm room. The walls were bare. The window blinds were broken. The room was a complete and total afterthought. "Welcoming" was probably the last word I would have used to describe it... It just was.
And then came the divorce - As with most divorces, we divided our assets in a way they felt fair between us. And among the items that went with the ex was the guest room bed and mattress. Then once COVID hit, I had absolutely no reason to replace them. After all, no one was coming over to visit any time soon. So my guest room fell even further into the pit of "catch-all" status.
Here, my friends, is what this room looked like in December:
Now que my sudden and overwhelming urge to renovate my house and thus my new lease on life. When I finished the... mmmm shall I say soul sucking(?) exterior windows project, I knew I needed to tackle something that would give me my energy back! On the first day of 2021, I rolled up my sleeves, I took a deep breath and I dove head first into the guest room! Once I finished my bed project, I moved right onto the paint color.
I knew right away that I wanted to get a little weird with it. I wanted to go totally monochrome with the walls and paint the trim, molding and even the ceiling all one color! When I laid out my samples, I panicked. I really wanted to take this design risk but if I picked the wrong color green, my guests were going to feel like they were staying in a mossy cave! With some help, I finally decided on Majolica Green by Sherwin-Williams. It had just enough coolness to offer contrast to the warm wood tones I was about to be using. I will admit, when I was finished painting and everything - I mean everything - was green, I was feeling very nervous. It was definitely a CHOICE!
Instead of playing it safe and painting the ceiling back to white, I decided to keep moving forward and trust myself. I bought my curtains and my bedding - yet another bold choice - I went with green bedding to go in my entirely green room... This was truly a proverbial trust fall with myself. I second guessed everything, but I changed nothing. I just kept moving forward! I made what I could, I went to every thrift store I could think of and snagged every deal I could find. And then I got to move on to the fun part: decorating!
Now here we are. 28 days later and I have a brand new guest room! I'm so unbelievably proud of myself! I'm proud of the work I put in to make this happen but I'm also proud of myself for sticking to my guns! I know I have a solid since of design, and this room was a really fun exercise in believing in myself. So here it is, my friends! The final outcome! I am tickled pink!... or should I say green?
